I write better when I smoke. Don’t ask me to reduce it to a science.

Brian

Poor Brian. I feel for him. I really do. Which is why I feel like such a shit saying that his blog is also the most friggin’ entertaining thing on the intartubes nowadays.

A lot of people I talk to about this often initially react with a mix of utter disbelief and *pshaw!* skepticism, followed by absolute acceptance of the revelations as truth. Brian is the Jun Lozada of gross decadence in Manila’s high society.

As far as I can tell, he’s telling the truth.

I’m not one of the Gucci Gang that he talks about, but i’ve been to my share of social events and parties. I haven’t ever been (nor will I ever) invited into the Embassy’s VIP rooms but I’m friends with some who have been in there and Brian’s descriptions of the goings on seem fairly accurate. Cocaine is the drug of choice. Weed is freely available, but it’s more like ‘maintenance,’ used just to make sure that you’re never completely off the high. Ecstasy is all over the place, you just have to know who to approach to get it. And crack … well, when you can’t afford coke …

What bothers me about Brian’s revelations is the utter contempt he seems to have for these people. If he hated them so much, if he so couldn’t tolerate their acts, why did he wait so long to denounce them (again a Jun Lozada question). I suppose the answer to that is simple enough. We don’t want to rock the boat if it’ll get us where we want to go. But once we’ve been tossed out of the boat, there’s no reason not to call it leaky and rotten and stinky.

These two great whistleblowers of 2007-2008 have that in common. They pretty much waited til they were in the shark-infested waters before they denounced the boats they were both in. Which leaves a lot of room for skepticism and accusations of sour-graping and insincerity. Too bad, that, because they would be perfect witnesses otherwise.

What does that say about us?

Now, if only Manolo would pick this up. It’s almost a certainty that once this gets to court major international news networks, cable news, will give it air time, especially with the blog tie-in…. Ginny Most perhaps?

Philippine networks are intimidated. I’m more interested in the impunity these people enjoy. Surely natiktikan na ang mga police at NBI about Embassy. It’s fairly common knowledge.

I mean these people, especially these people’s folks (who are influential but not that influential) are getting away with this because they are low enough in the political radar for higher powers to be interested in going after them. There’s no political mileage in raiding embassy, since most of these people are pasipsip lang and it’s not politically cost-effective crossing these people’s parents.

Brian Gorrell has become a latter-day Ferdinand Blumentritt, at least for the moment.

  6. Brian – pure entertainment.

    Cheers.

Great article and blog by the way.

Brian’s excuse was that he was in love. Having been in love before, I have to say it’s a valid excuse. It’s only later when you go, “Holy crap! What was I thinking?”

Now she’s turned into Patricia Evangelista.

  • Re-election 31 December 2008
Maceda sez Erap consulted Narvasa and others, and they told him that the 1987 Consti prohibits only the INCUMBENT prez from re-election. Former prezzies, by their definition, face no such prohibition. But in the same breath, Maceda also sez that they know an Erap candidacy will be the subject of a disqual case – but […]

I still think the Pangandaman’s shouldn’t have retaliated even if dela Paz threw the first punch. But is anyone really surprised at the escalation in the story-telling on both sides? BTW, I think we can dispense with the age angle nao.

Unless you’re spoiling for a fight, assume that the writer has some basis for what she writes. Don’t make like a lawyer and ask retarded questions in an attempt to lay the foundation for whatever point you’re trying to make.
